For my Context Statement I have chosen to focus on secondary education. I went to North Kingstown High School in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. This is one of the top public high schools in the state. North Kingstown High School provides a very good education for all its students who are willing to put effort into their schoolwork. It is a very safe environment with teachers who are eager to teach what they know. On top of having great teachers, there is always extra help available for students who need it. I became very close to most of my teachers on both a professional and personal level. I was very fortunate to have gone to NKHS. There was never a time where I felt unsafe or uncomfortable in this school.
Comparing my school to the one in “Savage Inequalities” is like comparing night and day. The school in “Savage Inequalities” is in a very bad area, almost comparable to towns in third world countries. There is no so stability and very little order in the school system. Most of the teachers are long-term subs and are getting paid less than $10,000 a year. This is unheard of in Rhode Island. Some of the students had tried to transfer schools but were unwelcomed by the other students. It is a vicious cycle for the students in St. Louis, Louisiana. It’s hard to compare this school and my high school. While I was struggling to get an A in my classes and keep up a social life, students in St. Louis are fighting to make it to the next day, safely.
